How NIJ 0108.01 Ballistic Testing is Executed

Understanding the rigorous laboratory test conditions required to confirm ballistic defeat capability.

1. Environmental Conditioning

Test glass panels are thermally stabilized at standardized test temperatures (20°C ± 5°C) and conditioned against extreme humidity to verify interlayer bonding integrity before firing.

2. Chronograph Velocity Calibration

Dual optical chronograph gates positioned 2 to 5 meters from the muzzle record the exact projectile velocity to ensure every shot meets or exceeds standard velocity requirements.

3. Precision Multi-Hit Pattern

Specimens are clamped securely into rigid steel test fixtures and struck with a designated 3-shot or 5-shot triangular cluster at specified center-to-center distances.

4. Witness Card Spall Inspection

A 0.5mm thick aluminum or cardboard witness sheet positioned 150mm behind the test sample is inspected. Any perforation or penetration constitutes a spall failure under zero-spall protocols.
